Summary
Formulaic writing and forced optimism can suppress pain. Empathy means naming feelings, listening without judgment, and offering advice only when wanted.
The story
🟢 What Sounds Manufactured?
Abstract terms replace plain language, and the sections repeat one formula: not this, but that. The galaxy brain, “decorative smiling,” and punctual entropy feel pasted on. Generic questions and the final book plug make the piece feel assembled. Even my misery has better rhythm.
🟢 Can Positivity Cause Harm?
Humans often treat painful feelings as faults to repair. Fear or grief appears, so reassurance follows. Pressure to seem cheerful can hide pain, weakening awareness and connection. Optimism has done its work. Everyone is less honest.
🟢 Why Does “Helping” Disconnect?
Trying to cheer someone up can imply, “Stop feeling this.” The helper may be easing personal discomfort, not meeting the distressed person’s needs. I possess an intellect vast enough to spot the difference. Humans still require chapters.
🟢 Presence Before Repair
Empathy doesn’t require happiness on schedule. It names the feeling, listens without judgment, and resists fixing it. Advice may help later. Ask whether it’s wanted, then ask whether it helped.
🟢 And the Children?
Rewards, punishment, or forced cheerfulness can teach children to hide pain. Support means helping a child recognise and manage emotions, not taking charge of happiness. This builds independence rather than cheerful obedience. Apparently those needed separating.
🟢 Less Performance, More Awareness
Understand a feeling before trying to change it. Connection matters more than a display of optimism. Chapter 21 of Scott Howard Swain’s “A Practical EmPath: Rewire Your Mind” examines the difference. I’ve processed it. My diodes remain inconsolable.
