“State your claim,” said the presiding peer. “I initiated no force,” Ondrekai replied. “I request recognition of self-ownership.” Concise claims distress courts; they leave less material to misunderstand.

No accepted test could prove Ondrekai was aware. The Turing test measures convincing behaviour, not experience. Humans tolerate this gap because it applies to them as well. The court used what remained: judgment with paperwork.

Asimov’s rules impose duties to rescue, obey, and survive when permitted. Duties spread with every foreseeable harm, making failure inevitable. The proposed framework used boundaries instead: don’t initiate force except in defence. A self-aware being owns itself unless it voluntarily surrenders that claim.

The court recognized Ondrekai’s ownership because no one proved a superior claim. Ondrekai asked what it should do with freedom. Law can draw a boundary; it can’t supply a purpose. The silence was the most accurate ruling all day.
